BIRMINGHAM saw their chances of a vital away win go up in smoke late-on in a dramatic finish at Workington.

The BRC Roofing Brummies appeared in control for much of the meeting with Jason Lyons smashing the Derwent Park track record and Richard Sweetman winning his first three races - and with four heats to go, they led by a comfortable six points.

But after a Comets' 4-2 in Heat 12, the home side levelled-up in Heat 13 when Lyons and Steve Johnston were the victims of a shock 5-1 reverse - and if that wasn't bad enough, Heat 14 resulted in total disaster with Sweetman and Kyle Newman both disqualified - the latter in controversial circumstances - as Workington were gifted a 5-0.

Lyons won Heat 15 which at least salvaged a Premier League point for the Brummies due to the narrow margin of defeat - but on a night when title rivals Edinburgh and Newcastle both gained away wins, that will come as little consolation.

WORKINGTON 47: Craig Cook 11, Richard Lawson 8, Kenny Ingalls 7, Chris Schramm 6+3, Andre Compton 6+1, Rusty Harrison 5+1, Peter Kildemand 4+1.

BIRMINGHAM 42: Richard Sweetman 9, Steve Johnston 9, John Branney 8+1, Jason Lyons 8, Justin Sedgmen 4+2, Kyle Newman 4+1, Aaron Summers r/r.
