BIRMINGHAM overcame the loss of inspirational skipper Jason Lyons to notch a briliant 48-42 win at Somerset on Friday.

Lyons had a tangle in the opening race which left him battered and bruised and reserve duo Kyle Newman and Jerran Hart covered for him superbly to make the win all the more impressive.

The meeting looked all over after Heat 12 when Birmingham pair Justin Sedgmen and Newman picked up a 5-1 maximum to extend the lead to eight-points.

But when the Rebels bounced back with a maximum of their own in the next it got tense for both sides as Birmingham looked to be running out of steam.

But when James Holder retired in the last race it allowed Graham Drury’s men a 4-2 with Richard Sweetman in control to win the match.

The last race was shared to deny Birmingham an extra league point with Ritchie Hawkins the winner.

SOMERSET: Ritchie Hawkins 13, Shane Parker 12, Sam Masters 9, Lubos Tomicek 4+2, James Holder 3, Mark Baseby 1, Cory Gathercole R/R.

BIRMINGHAM: Justin Sedgmen 13, Aaron Summers 9, Kyle Newman 8+2, Steve Johnston 8+1, Jerran Hart 5+2, Richard Sweetman 5+1, Jason Lyons 0.
