JASON Lyons' cruel last-race, last-lap engine failure robbed Brummies of a draw at worst from a dramatic Premier League encounter at Sheffield.

With the scores level at 42-42, Lyons was leading home man Ricky Ashworth with Steve Johnston battling Josh Auty for third place when the Birmingham skipper agonisingly ground to a halt on turn two, allowing Ashworth to take the flag with Johnston re-passing Auty for what had become second place.

Just as in Sunday's Premier Trophy clash at Perry Barr, Brummies were thwarted by the spectacular overtaking of Auty, who came from the back in each of his first four rides to keep the Tigers in the hunt.

Brummies led by two after a Justin Sedgmen/Richard Sweetman 5-1 in Heat 10 but they were pulled back when Richard Hall rode the widest of lines to pass Sweetman in Heat 14 and they then suffered Heat 15 heartbreak - although they did collect a potentially vital Premier League point due to the narrowness of the defeat.

SHEFFIELD: Josh Auty 13, Ricky Ashworth 13, Richard Hall 7, Peter Kildemand 5, Arlo Bugeja 3+2, Paul Cooper 3, Hugh Skidmore 2.

BIRMINGHAM: Steve Johnston 11, Richard Sweetman 8+1, Justin Sedgmen 7+2, Aaron Summers 7, Jason Lyons 5+3, Rusty Harrison 5+1, Kyle Newman 1+1.
