BIRMINGHAM pulled off a welcome 52-40 Premier League win over Scunthorpe on a spectacular night of racing at Perry Barr on Wednesday.

Scunthorpe kept the meeting tight in the early stages and it took until Heat 6 for the Perry Barr side to lead for the first time with a 4-2 from Steve Johnston and Justin Sedgmen over former Great Britain international David Howe.

Two successive maximum 5-1 wins involving Johnston, Sedgmen and Lyons in Heats 10 and 11 put Drury’s men in control.

And when Scunthorpe used Tero Aarnio as a tactical ride for double points in 12 the race was won by Aaron Summers after reserve Tom Perry had crashed out of the race.

That was the defining moment in the meeting which tipped it in Birmingham’s favour and they made no mistake in the closing stages to see the Scorpions off.

Skipper Jason Lyons said: "That was a big win for us after losing at home last week. We showed plenty of determination out there and got our reward."

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 14, Aaron Summers 12, Steve Johnston 11+2, Justin Sedgmen 10+3, Richard Sweetman 4, Tom Perry 1.

SCUNTHORPE: David Howe 11, Tero Aarnio 10+1, Carl Wilkinson 6+1, Magnus Karlsson 6, Jerran Hart 5+1, Simon Lambert 2+2.
