BIRMINGHAM pulled off a stunning 53-37 Premier Trophy win at Redcar to boost their claims for a place in the Premier Trophy Semi-finals.

Reserve Justin Sedgmen continued his brilliant start to the season with his new club by scoring 12+1 and Richard Sweetman was equally impressive with 10+1.

Manager Graham Drury said: “What’s particularly pleasing is the fact that the top two, Johno (Steve Johnston) and Jason (Lyons), were outscored by three of the youngsters. I’m highly delighted.”

After an even contest the turning point came when Sweetman teamed up with Chris Kerr for a maximum in Heat 10 which put the BRC Roofing Brummies ahead for the first time in the meeting.

And when Kerr and Sedgmen linked up for another maximum two races later Birmingham were in a comfortable 40-32 lead. Redcar, significantly, couldn’t nominate a rider for double points at this stage.

Sedgmen and Sweetman pulled off a maximum in the penultimate race which sealed the victory.

Graham Drury’s men will be looking for more of the same when they go to Scunthorpe on Friday (7.30).

BIRMINGHAM: Justin Sedgmen 12+1, Richard Sweetman 10+2, Chris Kerr 10+1, Steve Johnston 9, Jason Lyons 6, Aaron Summers 3+2, Jake Anderson 3.
