| | BIRMINGHAM boss Sam Ermolenko was pleased they could give the fans what they wanted as their long winless run came to an end in their last home league fixture of the year.
The Curtis Sport Brummies went into the clash having lost their previous 14 outings in all competitions - but after three long months they returned to winning ways with a tenacious 47-43 victory over a depleted Ipswich side.
It was quite fitting that shining light of the season Tom Brennan top scored as he dropped just two points to an opponent from six rides.
Elsewhere, No.1 Freddie Lindgren had dropped just one point to an Ipswich rider from his four programmed rides whilst recently recalled Aussie Zach Cook enjoyed paid double figures with a determined Heat 14 ride sealing the deal with one to go.
It was a much more positive night for Michael Palm Toft at reserve whilst both Leon Flint and guest Simon Lambert also managed one win apiece.
It was a result which, unsurprisingly, created a much happier environment at Perry Barr and Ermolenko was proud his side’s efforts were finally rewarded.
“I think that’s been coming for the last month or so to be fair,” he said.
“Ipswich came here with the team they had to put together, we had to put some pieces together as well and we just made the best out of what we had.
“We went out there, it was even for a while, I was getting a bit nervous there, but I knew that Tom is in form at the minute, Freddie is just Freddie, Zach did good and Michael, boy did he save us while Leon was trying his hardest.
“As a team, the last couple of meetings we tried to gel as best as we can because we know we’ve got the ingredients if we can all just click.
“They worked hard for it, we got the lead at the right time and I think that was important.
“Zach finished the deal off and it was nice with the restart that he didn’t fold, he challenged himself and gave the fans what they wanted.”
The Brummies head to Ipswich on Thursday (August 29, 7.30pm) for the return leg at Foxhall in their last league fixture of the year before Perry Barr hosts a round of the British Youth Championships next Monday (September 2, 7.30pm).
BIRMINGHAM 47: Tom Brennan 15+1, Freddie Lindgren 9+2, Zach Cook 9+1, Michael Palm Toft 6+1, Simon Lambert 5, Leon Flint 3, Piotr Pawlicki R/R. IPSWICH 43: Richard Lawson 13+1, Sam Masters 10, Troy Batchelor 6+1, Jordan Jenkins 4+2, Danny King 4+1, Dan Thompson 3+1, Cameron Heeps 3.
