| | BIRMINGHAM have snapped up British youngster Joe Thompson - after impressing AGAINST the Club early in the season.
The 19-year-old has already been on the opposing team at Perry Barr twice this year, scoring 5+1 on the opening night and then 9+1 for Scunthorpe in their narrow victory last week.
Despite that key display though, the Scorpions released the Nuneaton born racer shortly after as they shuffled their pack.
A former Birmingham mascot, Thompson will now come in at reserve for the Curtis Sport Brummies alongside James Pearson, with Ty Proctor the man to make way after a tough start to the season.
Team Manager Laurence Rogers said: "Firstly we'd like to thank Ty.
"He helped us out during the winter when we were searching for our final rider, he dedicated himself to the team role behind the scenes and he spent a lot of money on different bits and pieces.
"By his own admission though, he's been struggling quite a bit and at the end of the day, we have to do what is best for the Club - particularly with the league getting underway next week.
"When we spoke during the winter, Ty had already said that if he needed to be replaced, he would accept it and be understanding of why - and full credit to him, he took the news pretty well and we genuinely do wish him all the best.
"As for Joe, I get that it was a numbers game with Scunthorpe but I was shocked they released him based on his performances so far this season.
"He"˜s ridden brilliantly against us twice already this season - now we need him to come in and produce something very similar with the Brummies racejacket on!
"He's got a point to prove now I think, he's very determined, he likes the track at Perry Barr and I think he'll slot in with no problems at all."
Thompson will make his debut in the Brummies' Can Direct Championship opener at Plymouth next Tuesday (May 16) before lining up in the home fixture against Edinburgh next Wednesday (May 17, 7.30).
