| | BATTLING Birmingham suffered a 50-39 defeat at Eastbourne.
The Surestop Brummies came close to earning a consolation point but eventually left the tricky Arlington circuit empty handed.
It was nonetheless an encouraging performance from Graham Drury's side in what is notoriously one of the toughest fixtures on the calendar.
Powerhouse trio Jack Parkinson-Blackburn, Liam Carr and Tom Bacon all bagged double figures.
But they simply didn't receive enough support from the lower order despite their best efforts.
Team boss Drury was nonetheless proud of his side for their determined display.
Said Drury: "We went there believing we could get something, but unfortunately we didn't quite have enough tonight.
"We matched them heat-leader for heat-leader, but they just had a bit too much strength in their lower order which made the difference in the end.
"We couldn't question the effort from any of the team, everyone gave it their all, but everyone knows Arlington is something of a fortress and we saw that this evening."
The Brummies will be back in action when they head to Plymouth on Friday (7.15) before hosting Mildenhall on Wednesday, August 16 (7.30).
EASTBOURNE 50: Jake Knight 15, Matthew Bates 11+2, Tom Brennan 10+1, Charlie Saunders 6+4, Georgie Wood 6+1, Mark Baseby 2, Charley Powell r/r. BIRMINGHAM 39: Jack Parkinson-Blackburn 12, Liam Carr 10+2, Tom Bacon 10, David Mason 4+1, Taylor Hampshire 2, Layne Cupitt 1+1, Macauley Leek 0.
