BRAVE Birmingham defied the odds to claim their first away point of the season following a narrow 48-42 defeat at Poole.

The Selco Brummies gave the reigning Elite League Champions a major scare before eventually being forced to settle for a well-deserved consolation point.

A quite brilliant ride from Swedish star Daniel Nermark in a tense heat 15 ensured Birmingham gained the 3-3 required to see their gutsy performance rewarded with an addition to their points tally.

Nermark put in a fine performance as he and Ben Barker led the visitors in fine fashion - whilst Adam Skornicki provided excellent back up as he continued his strong run of form.

Skipper Danny King battled hard for his 3+1 point haul having been involved in some exciting action - whilst Eddie Kennett also played his part in a vital 5-1 from the tough No.1 position.

British youngsters Paul Starke and Simon Lambert also impressed with solid displays to give their side the edge at reserve on what was an encouraging night for the Perry Barr outfit.

Team boss Jack Lee praised the performance of his side - and he is hoping they can carry their momentum through to a tough clash with Swindon at the Abbey on Thursday.

Said Lee: "Everyone did their bit tonight and with a bit more luck we could have maybe pulled off a win.

"To come here to Poole and snatch a league point is a great effort and we are over the moon with that.

"Everyone pulled together to make an impact, and it was a really strong team performance in the end.

"If we can keep the riders fired up and they can perform in a similar way then I don't see any reason why we can't get another point at Swindon.

"This result gives us a lot of belief, and we are going there feeling like we can get a point - everyone is positive so we'll go and give it our best shot."
