BRUMMIES 46 COVENTRY 44

Wednesday April 09, 2014
BIRMINGHAM tasted victory for the first time in 2014 with a hard-fought 46-44 win over Midlands neighbours Coventry at Perry Barr.

The Selco Brummies survived a nervy last heat decider to edge a thrilling encounter and put three heavy defeats firmly behind them.

A combination of fast starting and determined riding helped the home side open up an eight point advantage before the interval - but their lead had been cut to just two by the final race of the night.

Yet the impressive Adam Skornicki and Danny King consolidated the minor placings behind Coventry No.1 Hans Andersen to ensure the Brummies took a confidence-boosting win.

And team boss Jack Lee was thrilled to see his side put their first two Elite League points on the board.

Said Lee: "That was brilliant tonight - I've got a smile on my face for a change because we really needed that win.

"I thought we'd let it slip when they got within two but we got the boys going for heat 15 and they did what they had to do.

"At least we've now got a win on the board which will give everyone a big lift and improve everyone's confidence ahead of next week."

Polish ace Adam Skornicki continued his excellent run of form to lead the home side - recording three classy race wins - whilst Danny King recovered from a poor start to the season to enjoy a promising night.

Reserve duo Paul Starke and Simon Lambert both picked up some vital points to bolster the Brummies lower order, plus Eddie Kennett, Daniel Nermark and Ben Barker all made useful contributions to complete an encouraging team display.

BIRMINGHAM 46: Adam Skornicki 12+1, Danny King 11, Paul Starke 6+2, Simon Lambert 5+1, Edward Kennett 5, Daniel Nermark 4+1, Ben Barker 3.

COVENTRY 44: Hans Andersen 11, Kyle Howarth 9+1, Ryan Fisher 8+1, James Sarjeant 7+1, Chris Harris 6+1, Kenneth Hansen 3+1, Jason Garrity 0.
