BIRMINGHAM crashed to a 55-38 defeat at the hands of title favourites Poole on Wednesday.
Polish star Seb Ulamek was in fine form with 13 and reserve Martin Smolinski offered strength in depth with 9+1.
But a woeful start which saw the Perry Barr boys 15-3 down after three heats proved costly.
Boss Phil Morris said: "The first three races were a shock to the system but we pulled it back and I strategically used the tactical ride in a race without Chris Holder or Darcy Ward, Poole's big hitters, but we came up a bit short in the end.
"It wasn't a good night at the office although Seb was excellent again, and he's so smooth and makes it look so easy.
POOLE 55: Dennis Andersson 15, Chris Holder 14, Darcy Ward 11+3, Ricky Kling 6+2, Linus Eklof 5+2, Sam Masters 4, Krzysztof Kasprzak r/r.
BIRMINGHAM 38: Sebastian Ulamek 13, Martin Smolinski 9+1, Danny King 5+1, Josh Auty 4+2, Ben Barker 4, Bjarne Pedersen 3, Jan Graversen 0.
