| | | BIRMINGHAM almost pulled off a dramatic opening night win over neighbours Wolves at Perry Barr but suffered a last gasp 46-44 WM Trophy defeat.
Powerful Wolves duo Freddie Lindgren and Peter Karlsson notched a 5-1 in the final heat to secure a visiting victory after the Brummies had dominated much of the meeting.
And Birmingham suffered a crushing blow when key man Claus Vissing crashed out of the meeting with a suspected broken wrist.
Wolves supplied the majority of heat winners but the Perry Barr side were relying on strength in-depth and ran out of steam at the vital moment.
The meeting pulled in a bumper crowd and the second leg takes place at Monmore Green next Monday, March 21.
BIRMINGHAM: Ben Barker 9+1, Krzysztof Kasprzak 7+2, Ales Dryml 7+2, Daniel King 7+2, James Wright 6+2, Claus Vissing 5, Daniel Nermark 3+1.
WOLVERHAMPTON: Fredrik Lindgren 15, Peter Karlsson 12+1, Tai Woffinden 10, Ricky Wells 5, Ludvig Lindgren 2+1, Tyson Burmeister 2, Ty Proctor 0.
