BIRMINGHAM came within one race of reaching the Premier League Play-Off Final - but now have a big task on their hands at Perry Barr to keep their season running.

The BRC Roofing Brummies contested a long-running double-header at Newcastle which was tough on man and machinery, and they were so close to an upset in the play-offs.

Defending a narrow four-point advantage and being without two of their key riders - Steve Johnston and Chris Kerr - few would have given the visitors a chance, but they superbly battled to keep their lead and actually extended it mid-meeting before being reeled back in.

The aggregate scores were level with two heats to go, and a 4-2 from Aaron Summers and guest Jan Graversen in Heat 14 edged the Brummies back in front.

But there was a heartbreaking finale with Diamonds duo Kenni Larsen and Mark Lemon getting the better of Summers and Jason Lyons in Heat 15 to take the home side through to a Final clash with Sheffield.

Brummies then turned their attentions to the Knockout Cup, but they will have to pull back 23 points on Wednesday if they are to take on Edinburgh in the Final.

A similar result to the first meeting would have been more than acceptable, but the home side grabbed the initiative early on when both Brummies' reserves crashed out of Heat 2 for a 0-5.

Newcastle gradually extended their advantage throughout the tie, despite Danish youngster Rene Bach only being able to take two rides due to injury.

Summers and Newman managed some late resistance in Heat 12 with a 5-1, but with Larsen and Lemon virtually unstoppable and getting good support from reserve Dakota North, Brummies have been left with a big uphill battle.
