BIRMINGHAM put on a brave display but went down 53-39 at title hopefuls Rye House on Saturday.

The Hoddesdon Rockets had strength in depth and were too strong for the Brummies who slipped to their second successive defeat.

And the scoreline was, ironically, a repeat of that at Perry Barr three-days earlier with Birmingham showing plenty of determination.

When the Rockets were 35-25 ahead, Brummies boss Graham Drury nominated popular Dane Ulrich Ostergaard for double points in heat 11 under the tactical ride rule and he notched a second place behind Stuart Robson. With team-mate Lee Smart third it was a 5-3 win to the Brummies.

However, Rye House always looked in control on a warm night in Hertfordshire although Brummies pair Jason Lyons and Ostergaard gave the travelling fans something to cheer in the last race with an impressive 4-2 race win.

Brummies now turn their attentions to Knockout Cup action when they face Newport in the first leg at Perry Barr on Wednesday (7.45pm).
