BRUMMIES held on to their unbeaten home record at Perry Barr - but they were taken all the way to a last-heat decider by a dogged Workington side in an incident-filled meeting.

Jason Lyons and Ulrich Ostergaard secured the points with a tremendous 5-1 in the last race, Lyons going from last to first with a spectacular move on the outside.

Workington fought back from a ten-point deficit after six races to narrow the gap to just three after Heat 11, with guest Josef Franc in fine form and twice lowering the track record.

Brummies, without injured skipper Brent Werner, saw Ostergaard excluded from Heat 10 for falling and impeding Kenneth Hansen, only for Hansen himself to crash spectacularly in the re-run.

The pressure was on after a 5-1 from Franc and Mattia Carpanese for the Comets in Heat 11 but Lyons and Ostergaard won the next two races before Lee Smart and Emiliano Sanchez shared Heat 14 to leave the Brummies three points ahead going into the decider.

It was a good all-round effort from the Perry Barr men, although an expensive night for reserve Ben Powell who started with two fine wins - and finished with two costly engine failures.

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 13+1, Ulrich Ostergaard 10+1, Aidan Collins 8+1, Ben Powell 7, Emiliano Sanchez 6+2, Lee Smart 4, Brent Werner r/r.

WORKINGTON: Josef Franc 10+1, Craig Branney 9, Kauko Nieminen 9, Mattia Carpanese 5+1, Kenneth Hansen 4+1, Charles Wright 3+1, Jamie Robertson 1.
