IN-FORM Australian star Mark Lemon was the winner of the inaugural running of the Joe Thurley Memorial Cup at Perry Barr.
Lemon switched bikes after a slow start to the meeting and reeled off wins in each of his last four rides, including defeating Brummies skipper Jason Lyons in the Final.
And whilst that would have been a minor frustration for Lyons who was unbeaten from his qualifying races, it augurs well for the Brummies as Lemon has been lined-up to guest for Tomasz Piszcz in next Wednesday's promotion semi-final against King's Lynn.
The Aussie duo were followed home in the Final by Paul Clews and Jay Herne, who both put in a number of battling rides in an entertaining meeting.
But Richard Sweetman was left cursing his luck after recording the second-highest score in the qualifiers, only to hit mechanical trouble at the start of his semi-final which resulted in his elimination.
Jason Bunyan was a mid-meeting withdrawal with damage to his arm after a crash caused by chain failure, whilst Polish newcomer Tomasz Michnicki had a torrid Perry Barr debut with falls and mechanical failures leaving him point-less.
The main meeting was conducted after a half-hour noise test of the sport's new Prodrive silencers, which featured three demonstration races contested by Sweetman, Clews, Ben Taylor and Luke Priest.
Initial feedback was positive, with the race times perfectly comparable with the meeting itself, and an obvious reduction in noise. The races were run with the stadium in contact with the noise-testing team in the local vicinity, and further feedback will follow.
