PREMIER League big-guns Birmingham and Sheffield put on a fine show in the sunshine at Perry Barr – and both clubs took something out of the meeting.

It took a last-heat 5-1 from Jason Lyons and Tomasz Piszcz to hand Birmingham victory from an incident-filled match.

Lyons was right back to form on his home circuit and swept to a paid maximum, but Eric Boocock’s Tigers took a point back to Owlerton for losing by less than seven points - largely thanks to a controversial Heat 14.

For much of the meeting, it was a battle between two in-form reserves with Brummies' Richard Sweetman and Tigers' Josh Auty both piling up big scores and gaining extra outings.

Birmingham's early six point advantage was eroded by the midway stage with the Tigers edging ahead thanks to maximum points from Auty and Richard Hall in Heat 9.

But the Brummies' response was emphatic as they secured 5-1s in three of the next four heats to go ten points clear and seemingly in complete control - especially as the Tigers' tactical ride in Heat 14 had to be taken by lesser reserve Chris Mills.

Mills was duly at the back on lap two, but the situation changed completely when Robert Ksiezak's machine expired and Sweetman fell when he appeared to be taking avoiding action.

When Sweetman stayed down, referee Phil Griffin put on the red lights and ruled Sweetman to be the cause of the stoppage, with Ksiezak also disqualified for not being under power - handing the Tigers an 8-0 and slashing the gap to just two points.

There was more drama in Heat 15 when Ricky Ashworth fell in a hard-fought first turn, but the re-start went in the Brummies' favour with the impeccable Lyons hitting the front and Piszcz edging out Ashworth in a blanket finish for second place.
