BIRMINGHAM suffered a 47-43 Premier Trophy defeat at the hands of Newport Wasps on Wednesday night.

It was a topsy-turvy affair, thoroughly enjoyable for the neutral observer but not good for the blood pressure of the respective team bosses.

When Birmingham raced into a 10-2 lead after the first two races it looked like a walk in the park for Graham Drury’s men.

But the South Wales side worked hard and got back into the meeting with some determined riding in the next couple of races.

Skipper Jason Lyons and Richard Sweetman were a powerful partnership with two successive 5-1 maximums, but their colleagues lacked consistency which allowed Newport to stay in the meeting.

With just five races to go the BRC Roofing Brummies were looking good with a six-point lead – but they suffered a nightmare run of results after the interval.

Mark Lemon was at his brilliant best to inspire a Newport revival which led them to victory.
But the key race was in Heat 14 when Newport romped to a 4-2 with the impressive Jordan Frampton leading the way to put them four-points up going into the last heat.

And although Lyons was a worthy winner in the last outing, Newport did enough to share the heat and run out winners to take three points.

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 14, Richard Sweetman 7+3, Tomasz Piszcz 7+2, Ludvig Lindgren 5, Robert Ksiezak 4+1, Marek Mroz 4, Ben Taykor 2+1.
NEWPORT: Mark Lemon 15, Jordan Frampton 11+2, Paul Fry 8+1, James Holder 7+3, Brent Werner 4, Nick Simmonds 2.
