BIRMINGHAM started their 2009 campaign with a 57-39 Premier Trophy defeat at Rye House.

The Brummies were no match for a fast-starting Rockets side on their own patch and it led to a heavy opening day loss.

Tomasz Piszcz and skipper Jason Lyons offered the best resistance scoring 17 and 14 points respectively, but there was a lack of support to the big two with new signing Marek Mroz next best with 4.

Rye House opened proceedings with a 4-2 in heat 1 after Brummies new-boy Richard Sweetman had touched the tapes and further increased that advantage to 17-7 after heat 4.

Lyons stopped the early rout with a six-point tactical ride victory in heat 5 ahead of Robert Mear and Linus Sundstrom, only for the Rockets to immediately strike back with a 5-1 in heat 6.

Piszcz and Robert Ksiezak reduced the arrears with a 4-2 in heat 7, but the home side replied with maximum points in the next two races to lead 37-20.

Thankfully Piszcz made his tactical ride count with the full six-points in heat 10 ahead of Chris Neath and Joe Haines, which momentarily pegged the scores back to 40-26.

Unfortunately Rye House increased their lead in heats 12 and 13, but the Brummies did finish on a winning note with Piszcz and Lyons taking four-points off Mear and Neath in the final race of the afternoon.
