BIRMINGHAM pulled off a thrilling 47.5-42.5 win over a powerhouse Workington side at Perry Barr on Wednesday.

Graham Drury’s men were up against it with four of their regular seven starters on the injured list – but their replacements did them proud.

Glasgow’s Robert Ksiezak , Berwick rider Paul Clews (both 9+1) and Isle of Wight man Jason Bunyan (4) came to the rescue with some determined racing for the BRC Roofing Brummies.

The meeting provided a close contest with excellent racing and a suerb atmosphere created by the buoyant crowd.

Reserve duo Clews and James Birkinshaw secured a maximum in Heat 2 after Charles Wright shed a chain and skipper Jason Lyons passed Kauko Nieminen superbly to help the home side to a 4-2 in the next race.

But Workington fought back and gained a 5-1 themselves in Heat 7 – only for Ksiezak and Birkinshaw to hit back for Birmingham.

Heat 9 saw a rare ‘dead heat’ when Lyons and Carl Stonehewer were given 1.5-points each for finishing level behind Wright – but the replays clearly showed Lyons got the drop and referee Mike Posselwhite got it wrong.

Victory for the BRC Roofing Brummies was secured in unlikely style when Clews pulled off a stunning ride to pass Wright in the penultimate race – that was after fellow guest Ksiezak beat former Wolves man Daniel Nermark superbly in the previous race.

It was a terrific night of entertainment with a satisfactory outcome for the home fans.

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 13.5+1, Robert Ksiezak 9+1, Paul Clews 9+1, Craig Watson 7+1, James Birkinshaw 5+1, Jason Bunyan 4.
WORKINGTON: Daniel Nermark 13, Kauko Nieminen 10+2, Carl Stonehewer 6.5, Charles Wright 6, Joe Haines 3, John Branney 2+1, Tomi Reima 2.
