DEPLETED Birmingham were edged out 48-42 in an entertaining clash with Reading at Smallmead.

Skipper Jason Lyons was at his brilliant best with a stunning 15-point haul from his six outings but Reading had greater strength in depth with reserve Jamie Smith particularly impressive scoring 12.

BRC Roofing Brummies boss Graham Drury felt the meeting was a good advert for Premier League racing and his side deserve credit for pushing the Racers hard.

Lyons and Smith were locked in a thrilling contest in Heat 7 when the Birmingham man appeared to have the edge before Smith got the drop on him with an intelligent move in the race of the night.

Birmingham’s hopes of sneaking a precious away win were ended in the penultimate race when Tomas Suchanek and Smith combined for a Reading 4-2.

“I’m bitterly disappointed with the defeat,” said Drury. “But it was a great meeting and I’m told it was the best of the season at Reading.”
