BIRMINGHAM'S busy weekend started with a defeat at Loomer Road on Saturday as rivals Stoke put on a strong all-round performance.

Brummies were effectively a two-man team in the Potteries and were hit particularly hard at reserve as Barrie Evans and Jesper Kristiansen scored 19 (paid 21) between them compared to the visitors' solitary point from third place in Heat 2.

Stoke extended their lead virtually throughout the meeting and Jason Lyons' six-point tactical ride never looked likely to spark a comeback - with the highlight of the night coming right at the end as Lyons and Adam Roynon took a 5-1 in Heat 15 after a good scrap with Lee Complin.

Jack Roberts took two rides as No.8 and scored a fine point in Heat 3, but he was then involved in a crash with Evans in Heat 7 and withdrew from the remainder of the meeting.

STOKE 56: Ben Barker 10, Barrie Evans 10, Jesper Kristiansen 9+2, Lee Complin 9+1, Emiliano Sanchez 8+2, Mark Burrows 7, Klaus Jakobsen 3+1.

BIRMINGHAM 36: Jason Lyons 16+1, Adam Roynon 10, Lee Smart 5+1, Henning Bager 3, Jack Roberts (no.8) 1, Mattia Carpanese 1, Jack Hargreaves 0, Phil Morris r/r.
