THE Brummies gave Somerset the fright of their lives as they staged a late fight-back, but it was sadly all in vain as they finally went down to a narrow 48-45 defeat at the Oak Tree Arena.

Graham Drury’s side were heading for what looked to be a heavy away loss as they trailed by eighteen-points after heat 10, but they so nearly ended-up toasting a seemingly unlikely result as teenage sensation Adam Roynon and skipper Jason Lyons led a tremendous comeback in the closing heats.

Somerset got off to the best possible start with 5-1s in the opening three races and further heat advantages ensured by the time 10 races had been completed the Rebels had what looked to be an unassailable 39-21 lead.

The fight-back started with Roynon’s tactical ride win in heat 11 when he led home Lee Smart, Simon Walker and Jordan Frampton, and the ensuing 8-1 was quickly followed up with a 4-2 in heat 12 from Roynon and Lyons.

Roynon and Lyons further stunned the home crowd with a Brummies five-pointer in heat 13 over the previously unbeaten Jason Doyle and with Birmingham trailing by just five-points with two heats to go, an unlikely comeback was still on the cards.

The home side, however, kept their nerve and the result was confirmed when Rebels captain Simon Walker won heat 14, but the BRC Roofing Brummies will have travelled home kicking themselves for their poor start to the meeting.
