DEPLETED Birmingham started their Premier League programme in style with a 53-37 win over Scunthorpe at Perry Barr.

Inspirational skipper Jason Lyons was at his brilliant best just three-days after suffering an arm injury to secure a full, six-ride, 18-point maximum.

It was a stunning display by the former Belle Vue man against the league's newcomers and guest riders Ben Powell and Ben Barker performed well to help the inury-hit Brummies side.

Lyons was particularly spectacular in Heat 12 when he managed to get the better of Scorpions' most impressive rider Andrew Moore for his fifth win.

Hard-working reserve Lee Smart once again showed his worth and took six outings as the Brummies covered well for the injured Kyle Legault.

And it was Smart who teamed up with the impressive Adam Roynon for maximum points in Heat 14 when the Scorpions used Moore as a tactical substitute as a last resort - but he was unable to make any impression from his handicap of 15-metres.

It was the home side's second successive 5-1 after guest Ben Barker came good with Lyons in Heat 13 - and all that remained was for Lyons to wrap up his full house in the last race as Roynon only just failed to pass Moore after four laps of hard chasing.

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 18, Adam Roynon 11+3, Lee Smart 11+1, Ben Powell 6+1, Ben Barker 4+3, Jack Hargeaves 3, Kyle Legault R/R.
SCUNTHORPE: Andrew Moore 13, Carl Wilkinson 8, Richard Hall 6, Magnus Karlsson 5+1, Byron Bekker 4, Benji Compton 1, Viktor Bergstrom 0.
