BIRMINGHAM beat Coventry 48-42 in a thoroughly entertaining West Midlands Challenge at Perry Barr on Wednesday.
A healthy crowd was in attendance with a decent travelling contingent out to see a rare track appearance for the Bees.
It was a close contest throughout with the Curtis Sport Brummies sealing victory in the penultimate race thanks to consecutive heat advantages.
Team boss Laurence Rogers said: "I thought that was a really terrific night of Speedway all round.
"There was hardly anything between the two sides all meeting, we saw some cracking racing and it was a really enjoyable meeting to be a part of.
"I thought the effort and commitment of the guests to say it was only a Challenge fixture with nothing riding in it was superb and a big thank you to them all!"
James Wright top scored for the Brummies and was involved in a couple of terrific battles with Coventry's Chris Harris who, unsurprisingly, put on a terrific show in the Second City.
Lee Complin again impressed down at reserve with his never say die attitude while Tom Brennan was also in the thick of the action.
After a disappointing first couple of rides, former Brummie Simon Lambert came to life and produced three solid outings while Broc Nicol eased to victory in his last race after struggling beforehand.
For the two regular Birmingham riders, James Pearson certainly did his job down at reserve while stand-in skipper Justin Sedgmen was withdrawn from the meeting with abdominal discomfort caused in a Heat Four first bend collision with Hans Andersen.
The Championship League Riders' Championship takes place at Poole next Wednesday (August 24) with the next Perry Barr action on Wednesday, August 31 (7.15) as the club hosts the prestigious 2022 Tolley Badges British Under-21 Final.
CHALLENGE BIRMINGHAM 48: James Wright 12, Lee Complin 9+3, Tom Brennan 9, Simon Lambert 8+2, James Pearson 6+2, Broc Nicol 4, Justin Sedgmen 0. COVENTRY SELECT 42: Chris Harris 14, Connor Mountain 12+1, Hans Andersen 8, Adam Roynon 4, Joe Thompson 3, Luke Crang 1, Freddy Hodder 0.
