BRUMMIES 50 REDCAR 40

Wednesday June 22, 2022
BIRMINGHAM enjoyed their biggest win of the season with a fantastic 50-40 success over Redcar.

It was easily the performance of the year so far from the Curtis Sport Brummies who made it back-to-back league victories for the second time this term.

The hosts stunned their opponents as they stormed into a 26-10 lead after just six races, courtesy of four 5-1 maximums.

The visiting Bears clawed four points back with successive 4-2s before the gap was reduced to ten points after Heat 11 when reserve switch Jordan Jenkins followed captain Charles Wright home for their only 5-1 of the night.

That was the moment Redcar team manager Jade Mudgway elected to put Lewis Kerr in as a tactical substitute - but the visiting boss was left with his head in his hands as Kerr failed to leave the start line with bike problems halting their challenge.

The fixture wound down with four straight 3-3s and the joy was clear for all to see at Perry Barr as they finally moved into double figures for the season.

Team boss Laurence Rogers said: "50-40 makes it sound much closer than it actually was.

"That was a walloping really and the final scoreline flatters Redcar a bit.

"We were the better side all the way through and it could and probably should've been an even bigger victory.

"All the boys were on it though, it was a great team performance, they were all on it from 1-7 and understandably we're all going home very happy tonight."

Justin Sedgmen top scored for the hosts after rounding off his night with two classy race wins.

Meanwhile former Brummie Paco Castagna enjoyed his guest booking alongside captain Ashley Morris who bagged two 5-1s together, helping them on their way to paid double figures each.

Claus Vissing returned for the first time in almost a month and showed some positive signs with two race victories on his way to 7+1 - a total matched by Stefan Nielsen who continued his solid form.

James Shanes and James Pearson contributed nine points from down at reserve as well, with a 5-1 from them in Heat Two providing the Brummies with a nice bit of early momentum.

The Curtis Sport Brummies head to league leaders Leicester on Saturday (June 25, 7pm).

The next action at Perry Barr will now take place on Wednesday, July 6 (7.30) when Glasgow are the visitors with next week's scheduled fixture against Newcastle cancelled following their withdrawal from the 2022 Championship.
