BIRMINGHAM'S brave bid for silverware in the Young Shield was finally ended by Redcar in the final meeting of the season at Perry Barr.

The Bears entered the second leg with an eight-point lead and successfully defended that advantage, even taking the win on the night with a 3-3 in the last race.

It was always going to be an uphill task for the Brummies in such a depleted state due to injuries, and they were unable to make the fast start which was required as the Bears stormed into a 12-6 lead on the night.

Chris Schramm became the first Birmingham race winner in Heat 4 but he was involved in a heavy crash with Chris Kerr in Heat 6 - Kerr was excluded, but Schramm suffered machine damage and dropped a chain in the re-run

Paul Clews sparked hopes of a fightback with a superb win over James Grieves in
Heat 7, but the Redcar top three always had enough in hand - and their other three riders all won at least one race.

Brummies skipper Jason Lyons brilliantly went past both Gary Havelock and Kerr to win Heat 13 - but the 3-3 made the Bears virtually certain of overall victory, and this was confirmed by a 4-2 from Jack Hargreaves and Simon Lambert in Heat 14.

Fittingly, Lyons won the final race of the night at the end of a wonderful season, after which the Brummies riders said their farewells to another bumper crowd who have supported the team so well throughout a hugely successful year.

BIRMINGHAM: Jason Lyons 15, Joel Parsons 8+1, Paul Clews 7, Chris Schramm 6, Lee Smart 4+1, Shaun Tacey 3+2, Manuel Hauzinger r/r.

REDCAR: James Grieves 12+1, Chris Kerr 11, Gary Havelock 9+2, Jack Hargreaves 5+1, Dan Giffard 5, Simon Lambert 4, Matt Tresarrieu r/r.
