BIRMINGHAM’S Rider of the Year James Shanes will be back with the club next season.

The 22-year-old joins Chris Harris and Jason Garrity in the Brummies’ Championship side for 2020.

The Dorset based racer sadly ended the 2019 campaign on the sidelines with numerous injuries, including a broken back.

But he’s well on the road to recovery and has thanked club bosses for ensuring he’ll be back at Perry Barr for a third straight year.

Said Shanes: “I’m so massively grateful to them for giving me another chance.

“We’ve been speaking about it for a while now but we just wanted to wait for a couple of scan results to come back and thankfully they were all clear, in fact I’m actually ahead of schedule.

“After that it was a no brainer; I’ve enjoyed every minute of being at Birmingham and I’m really excited about next season not only for me personally, but also for the team as well.”

Meanwhile team manager Laurence Rogers said: “Shanesie has kind of become part of the fixtures and fittings since we came in as a management team to Birmingham.

“He’s a cracking lad, he’s hugely popular among our supporters and he’s not too bad on a Speedway bike at all is he?

“He produced some excellent performances for us this year and we’re confident he will do the same in 2020.

“He’s an excellent asset to have and it goes without saying that we’re thoroughly looking forward to having him back again.

“The team is already looking good on paper and we’ll be announcing another two names later this week.”
