BIRMINGHAM head to Eastbourne on Saturday for their first official fixture of the season (8pm).

The Edwards Plumbing Brummies take on the Eagles in the Championship Shield in a clash of the sides who moved up from the National League over the winter.

Brummies went down 53-37 to top flight outfit Wolverhampton in David Mason’s Farewell on Wednesday.

But team boss Laurence Rogers believes there’s plenty to be hopeful about ahead of the trip to East Sussex.

“We may have lost the meeting on Wednesday but we were always massive underdogs as a team in the league below Wolves,” he said.

“People who were there in the stadium will have seen the effort the boys put in and there were some real positives to take out the meeting.

“Tobias (Thomsen) and Paco (Castagna) really put on a show and impressed on their Birmingham debuts.

“It was good to see Zach (Wajtknecht) settle back in at Perry Barr straight away and for me another positive is that there’s so much more to come from the likes of James (Shanes), Ulrich (Ostergaard) and Kyle (Newman) and of course Ash (Morris) was against us for one night only and he was superb.

“We know the trip to Arlington is usually a tough one but hopefully we can catch them out in their first meeting of the year.”

EASTBOURNE: Edward Kennett, Ben Morley, Alfie Bowtell, Lewis Kerr, Richard Lawson, Georgie Wood, Tom Brennan.
