BATTLING Birmingham dug deep to grind out a win in their final fixture of the season.

The Edwards Plumbing Brummies were pushed all the way by bottom side Buxton but edged a 46-44 victory in testing conditions in Derbyshire.

Brummies established an early lead with a trio of 4-2s in the opening four races; two led by star guest Max Clegg and the other by two-time title winner Tom Perry.

But the hosts hit back with maximums in heats five and eight and a 4-2 in the ninth saw them lead 29-25.

But Clegg and Perry continued their fine afternoon as the Brummies again hit the front with Stoke man Paul Burnett also contributing a couple of crucial third places.

Stand-in skipper Leon Flint got the better of home captain Tom Woolley in the penultimate race before classy Clegg reeled off a fifth race win out of six in the final race as Brummies sneaked the win.

Team Manager Laurence Rogers said: “After the season we’ve had it’s nice to head into the winter with a win in the final meeting.

“Full credit to both sets of riders because conditions were far from ideal; it was damp, drizzly and even foggy at times yet every single one of them gave it their all.

“Buxton pushed us hard and it even looked as if it was slipping away from us mid-meeting.

“But we had some strong guests in Cleggy and Tom Perry and they found some big race wins for us in the second half.

“As I’ve said it was a nice way to end what has been a very testing season - and it was nice to get through a meeting without any injuries.

“We’re now looking forward to the End of Season Awards night at Perry Barr on November 9 but there’ll still be plenty of hard work going on behind the scenes as well as we start turning our attentions to 2019.”
