BIRMINGHAM boss Laurence Rogers believes the progression of the club’s two reserves bodes well for the duo’s future.

Sheldon Davies and Josh Embleton were signed during the second half of the season by the Edwards Plumbing Brummies for their first real dose of third tier racing and have benefitted from the experience.

Davies represented Birmingham in the National League Riders’ Championship on Sunday following the late withdrawal of teenage star Leon Flint.

He managed one point from his five outings after getting the better of Belle Vue’s Ben Woodhull in Heat Three, in a meeting won by Isle of Wight’s Ben Morley who beat team-mate Alfie Bowtell in a run-off.

Meanwhile, Embleton was crowned the Northern Junior League Champion on Saturday after going unbeaten from seven rides at Redcar.

Said Rogers: “It was always going to be a big ask for both of them when we signed them but I think they deserve a lot of credit for the way they came in and applied themselves.

“Sheldon had never had any experience in the National League before and Josh had done the odd meeting here and there.

“But I feel they’ve both shown glimpses of their potential along the way and most importantly for them I think it’s been a good learning curve which will stay with them as they take the next steps on their careers.

“For Sheldon it was a great experience to be a part of the NLRC and his first ride was pretty impressive.

“He beat Ben Woodhull fair and square and wasn’t a million miles away from Kyle Bickley who’s also a Championship rider as well.

“Things naturally got harder for him the more the top riders settled down but as I’ve said it was another good experience for him and it’s all about learning at this stage of his career.

“As for Josh, to win the Northern Junior League Championship is a big thing for him.

“No matter what the level or standard, when you win an individual meeting it gives you a massive confidence boost.

“But to go unbeaten from seven rides takes some doing and fair play to him, he deserves it.”

The Brummies will travel to Mildenhall on Sunday, October 7 and Buxton on Sunday, October 14 for their two outstanding away league fixtures and are currently finalising plans for their Season Finale at Perry Barr on Wednesday, October 17 (7.30).
