MILDENHALL v BRUMMIES, PREVIEW

Saturday September 22, 2018
BIRMINGHAM have been dealt yet another injury blow ahead of Sunday’s crucial trip to Mildenhall (3pm).

Teenage sensation Leon Flint crashed representing the Young Lions at Plymouth on Friday and has sustained soft tissue damage in his knee.

It means the Edwards Plumbing Brummies are without any of the riders they started the season with for their last fixture before the cut-off date.

The Perry Barr side still need a league point against the leaders though to snatch the final play-off spot.

The Brummies have booked former British Under-19 Champion Max Clegg, Eastbourne pair Georgie Wood and Ethan Spiller as well as Nick Laurence down at reserve with Josh Embleton unavailable due to work commitments.

Team boss Laurence Rogers said: “We couldn’t believe it when we heard Leon had crashed on Friday night.

“It really does just sum our season up and it’s unbelievable how much bad luck we’ve had.

“It goes without saying it’s a massive blow for what is such a huge meeting for us - but we have to remain as positive as we can.

“Myself and David (Mason co-promoter) went through all the available guests and we again think we’ve gone with the strongest options.

“Cleggy has well and truly rediscovered his mojo over the past couple of weeks and his scores at this level have been exceptional.

“He’s riding with so much confidence right now and when he’s in the mood, he’s difficult to beat.

“Georgie Wood is someone who’s progressed nicely year-on-year with Eastbourne and again, some of his scores for the Eagles have been more than impressive.

“They were also two riders who we had in our side at the rained-off Buxton fixture last weekend and we feel they deserved another opportunity.

“They won the rides they managed last Sunday and showed what they’re capable of.

“Ethan and Nick just need to come in and do what they can and hopefully as a group they can earn that league point we need.”

MILDENHALL: Danny Ayres R/R, Ryan Kinsley, Jason Edwards, Jordan Jenkins, Drew Kemp, Matt Marson, Sam Bebee.

BIRMINGHAM: Georgie Wood, Ethan Spiller, Max Clegg, Leon Flint R/R, James Shanes, Sheldon Davies, Nick Laurence, Connor King (Number 8).
