RECENT Birmingham signing James Shanes suffered no broken bones in a crash at Sheffield on Thursday.

The 21-year-old, who only made his Edwards Plumbing Brummies debut on Wednesday, lifted dramatically while on Championship duty with his bike slamming down onto his left foot.

With swelling reduced overnight, Shanes visited his local hospital where x-rays confirmed no broken bones, but he has sustained a sprained ankle.

He was set to miss Sunday’s Knockout Cup trip to Mildnehall due to Longtrack commitments anyway, but now club bosses are hoping he’ll be fit to take his place in Wednesday’s National League home fixture against reigning Champions Belle Vue.

Team Manager Laurence Rogers said: “I’ve seen a video of James’ crash and it was a really hefty landing for him.

“We were really crossing our fingers for the lad because he showed on Wednesday what a signing he could prove to be for us at this level.

“Thankfully it’s not as bad as we first feared and we’ll assess James’ situation day-by-day.

“We’ve had so much bad luck with injuries already this year – you won’t catch me walking anywhere near any ladders, drains or black cats for the rest of the season!”
