BIRMINGHAM Speedway have named a female rider in their development squad.

23-year-old Rachel Hellowell will race for the Ductair Electrics Bulls in the Midland Development League.

The announcement was made at a special pre-season event on Thursday, which was also International Women's Day.

The news was well received from supporters and Birmingham team boss Laurence Rogers described it as a big step forwards.

"We are slowly seeing a few more females give speedway a go but to have Rachel as part of the Bulls squad is something we are very proud of," he said.

"She has got some experience under her belt already and got back on a bike at Plymouth last year.

"She's found her love for racing again and she can't wait to get going with the Bulls.

"Rachel may not the best gater in the world, but that only adds to the entertainment because she certainly gives it her all and doesn't like finishing last!

"It was refreshing to here the cheer in the room when we announced Rachel was riding for us in the MDL and this is a pretty big move for the club in its latest era."

Rhys Naylor was also added to the squad and joins Leon Flint and Kyle Roberts.
