BIRMINGHAM have named Mitchell Davey as their captain for the 2018 Travel Plus National League season.

The 27-year-old takes over the role from Jack Parkinson-Blackburn who joined local rivals Coventry over the winter.

Meanwhile Tom Bacon, who is preparing for his third straight year at Perry Barr, has been promoted to vice-captain of the Edwards Plumbing Brummies.

Team Manager Laurence Rogers said: "Mitchell's age and experience made him the standout candidate for the captaincy and he's got so much to offer in that role too.

"Not only will he be a role model out on the track, but behind the scenes he's a real team player too.

"I worked with Mitch at Coventry Storm a couple of years ago and he is excellent at communicating with his team-mates.

"He comes in from a race and before he speaks to his own pit corner, he's going round the rest of the pits giving little tips and pieces of advice to his team-mates about track conditions and racing lines and things like that.

"With Mitch also riding for Swindon in the Premiership, we've chosen Tom Bacon to be our new vice-captain.

"He's recently been signed by Peterborough in the Championship, but fixture clashes are very, very minimal.

"Whenever Tom has to stand in for Mitch, he is someone who knows the club really well and he will do a great job of spurring the team on for sure."

Meanwhile new skipper Davey said: "I've never been a team captain before so I'm even more excited for the season ahead now.

"Passing on bits of advice and creating a healthy team spirit are my two main aims and it's going to be great to work with a group of riders who I believe have got the potential to win the league this year.

"I want the team to create a special relationship with the supporters this season again as well so myself and David (Mason - co-promoter) are thinking of a few ways we can make that connection even stronger.

"They are the backbone of everything we do and hopefully we can enjoy a really successful season by all working together as one."

Birmingham will stage their annual Press and Practice Event on March 21 before opening their campaign against Coventry in a one-off challenge at Perry Barr on Wednesday, March 28 (7.30).
