BIRMINGHAM endured a frustrating night at Perry Barr as their National League clash against Coventry was washed out after eight races.

The Surestop Brummies lead 28-20 at the point of stoppage, two races before they could have declared a meeting result.

A torrential downpour during the whole of heat four caused a 30 minute delay while extensive track work was carried out.

The riders inspected the circuit and raced out the next three heats with sun shining through.

However, a sudden heavy rain shower during heat eight put an end to the fixture much to the disappointment of all, in particular Birmingham team manager Graham Drury.

He said: "The weather forecast was always fine for tonight and the two rain showers really did catch us out.

"Full credit to all the riders though who were keen to get out there and give it a go; they coped well from heats five to eight and fair play to them.

"After plenty of debate, a senior rider from each team went out and did a few test laps after heat eight but visibility was challenging and conditions proved too difficult.

"As I've said though, credit to the riders, the referee and officials; we tried every way possible to get to the end of the meeting but it just wasn't viable on this occasion.

"We hope the supporters understand the decision. At the end of the day, rider safety is paramount and in the end we had to make a sensible choice as frustrating as it may be."

Tom Bacon was the stand out rider of the night with three textbook starts and wins from three outings while Danyon Hume and Tom Perry also returned to form in their trio of rides.

But they will have to do it all over again and details of a rearranged date will be confirmed in due course.

Supporters are urged to keep hold of their re-admission tickets, full details of re-use will be issued at a later stage.

The Brummies head to Kent on Monday before hosting Stoke back at Perry Barr next Wednesday.

BIRMINGHAM 28: Tom Bacon 9, Tom Perry 7, Danyon Hume 5+2, Jack Parkinson-Blackburn 5+1, Darryl Ritchings 2+1, Jack Smith 0, Zach Wajtknecht R/R.

COVENTRY 20: Liam Carr 5, Ryan Terry-Daley 3+1, Bradley Andrews 3+1, Mitchell Davey 3, Callum Walker 3, Conor Dwyer 3, Dan Greenwood 0.
