BIRMINGHAM slipped to a narrow 46-44 defeat on a tense night of National League action at Perry Barr.

On a night that saw some spectacular racing, the home side just fell short in a last heat decider.

The Surestop Brummies got off to a relatively slow start and found themselves trailing by eight-points with five races gone.

The Brummies fought back in tricky conditions to close the gap on Cradley to just two-points with ten heats gone.

Two Heathens heat advantages pulled them six-points clear after heat 12 but a 5-1 from heat-leader duo Adam Ellis and Tom Perry pulled the Brummies back to within two-points with two to go to endure a tense end to the meeting.

A sensational ride from Zach Wajtknecht kept the Brummies hopes alive, but as Perry was shut out on the opening bends of the final race, a full maximum from No.1 Ellis wasn't enough to stop the Brummies suffering their first loss in ten meetings at Perry Barr.

Team Manager Graham Drury said: "We were found wanting in the lower end and our tail end was very long once again.

"But you have to say well done to Cradley because you could see they were up for it and they edged what was another great advert for the National League.

"Naturally we're disappointed to just miss out, but we're still in a strong position and all I can say now is, 'watch out Buxton!'"

Adam Ellis eased to a comfortable 15-point maximum on another immaculate performance from the Brummies No.1.

Fellow heat-leaders Perry and Wajtknecht chipped in with 9-points a-piece and both pulled of some spectacular outside passes.

Sam Chapman was quick away from the gates but struggled to hang on for his points while Adam Kirby had a steady night back in the main body of the team.

George Hunter put in 100 per cent effort while Alex Wilson endured a disappointing meeting back in the reserve berths.

BIRMINGHAM 44: Adam Ellis 15, Tom Perry 9+1, Zach Wajtknecht 9, Sam Chapman 4+1, Adam Kirby 4, George Hunter 2+1, Alex Wilson 1.
CRADLEY 46: Ellis Perks 12, Max Clegg 11+1, Michael Neale 8+1, Darryl Ritchings 7+1, Arron Mogridge 6+1, Tylier Govier 2+1, Matt Williamson R/R.
