BIRMINGHAM fought back from four points down to claim a 47-42 victory over Eastbourne in the first leg of their Knockout Cup clash.

The opening seven races saw just one heat advantage registered which went the way of the Brummies in Heat Two to open up a narrow two point lead.

But two consecutive heat advantages for the Eagles saw the visitors move four points in front with nine heats gone.

The Brummies showed good character to turn the meeting around and finished off the night with four, 4-2's to secure the win on the night.

Team Manager Graham Drury had mixed emotions after the meeting.

Said Drury: "We ideally wanted a double figure lead from tonight's meeting and to only come away being five points in front is disappointing; I expected more, but this cup tie is far from over.

"But on the same hand it was a good spirited fightback and it was good to keep our unbeaten run going.

"As seems to be the case in every meeting, I thought Adam Ellis, Tom (Perry) and Zach (Wajtknecht) were all superb, but we had a long tail end tonight and it's something we need to look at.

"But for now we will focus on the positives and enjoy another win at Perry Barr."

Superstar reserve Zach Wajtknecht top scored for the Brummies with another double-figure score from seven rides.

Adam Ellis was unbeaten by an opposing rider for a third meeting in a row. He broke the National League track record at Perry Barr in Heat Six, before going on to break his own feat in the final race of the night in a time of 59.97.

Captain Tom Perry put in another determined performance to pick up two heat wins on his way to twelve points.

Alex Wilson's efforts deserved even more than the vital 4+1 he did manage, whilst Adam Kirby and Harvie Banks both endured tough nights.
