BIRMINGHAM bounced back from Sunday’s Premier Trophy Final defeat with a thumping 57-36 Premier League victory over Newcastle on Wednesday evening at Perry Barr.

Brummies skipper Jason Lyons was once again in the thick of the points top-scoring with 14 and, Ulrich Ostergaard returned to the team from his recent injuries with a 12 point contribution. All the Birmingham riders were paid for at least one win apiece and it was a match they were always in control of from start to finish.

The Brummies got off to a blistering start and quickly opened up a 14-4 lead after three races. Jonas Raun won a shared heat 4 for Newcastle, but a further Birmingham 4-2 in heat 5 made it 21-9.

Newcastle did offer a brief reply courtesy of a Josef Franc tactical ride win in heat 7 over Emiliano Sanchez and Ben Powell, with the ensuing Diamonds 6-3 reducing the deficit to 27-18.

Birmingham continued to build up a healthy lead, but two 5-1’s in the closing stages put the finishing touches to an excellent team performance. Ostergaard and Sanchez took maximum points in heat 13, followed by five more from Henrik Moller and Lee Smart in heat 14.

The final race saw a win for Franc ahead of Lyons and Ostergaard, which was the Brummies skipper’s only dropped point of the night.
