BIRMINGHAM suffered their first point-less evening of a busy week when they went down 53-39 at Lakeside on Friday.

The Selco Brummies were always up against it at Purfleet with only three of their regular riders involved, although double-uppers Ricky Ashworth and Joe Screen worked hard to cover the absence due to Premier League commitments of Ben Barker and Josh Auty.

Sebastian Ulamek also impressed on a circuit far removed from his Polish upbringing, and a three-race winning streak from the Brummies No.5 at least steadied the ship after the Hammers had threatened to run away with proceedings.

Their 17-7 lead after four races was trimmed back to 32-24 after nine, with Martin Smolinski also winning Heat 8, and at that stage the Brummies had a genuine chance of taking at least a point from the meeting.

But things began to go away in the next two races when Bjarne Pedersen, so superb at Swindon on Thursday, was relegated to the back on both occasions with ex-Brummie Justin Sedgmen playing a starring role for the Hammers.

A last-ditch tactical ride for Ashworth in Heat 12 went wrong when the Birmingham man was disqualified, although Ashworth did gain some consolation by teaming up with Screen for a 5-1 in Heat 14 to regain ground on the top four.

But by that stage the Hammers had made sure of all three points, leaving the Brummies with five for the week and needing to add more at Poole next Wednesday and at home to Coventry 24 hours later.

LAKESIDE 53: Davey Watt 10+1, Peter Karlsson 10+1, Jonas Davidsson 9, Justin Sedgmen 7+2, Stuart Robson 7+1, Kim Nilsson 6, Robert Mear 4+1.

BIRMINGHAM 39: Sebastian Ulamek 13+1, Ricky Ashworth 7+1, Bjarne Pedersen 7, Joe Screen 6+1, Martin Smolinski 6, Carl Wilkinson 0, Daniel King r/r.
