BIRMINGHAM will go into their Good Friday clash with Swindon at Perry Barr (7.30pm) having gained an Elite League point from their opening fixture at Blunsdon.

The Selco Brummies trailed by eleven points with two heats to go, but got the margin back to under seven, which was enough to give them a point and limit the Robins to two.

Boss Graham Drury had spoken in the build-up of the importance of No.1 Bjarne Pedersen, who had missed the recent Midland League fixtures, and his words were proved completely accurate as the Danish star piled up a bumper paid-18 haul.

Included in that total was a Heat 1 5-1 with Ben Barker over Troy Batchelor and Nick Morris which gave the Brummies a platform to strongly compete during the first half of the meeting.

Things appeared to be going away from them when Swindon picked up a series of three 5-1s in four races from Heat 9, Josh Auty twice coming to grief for the Brummies, but Pedersen’s six-point tactical ride win in Heat 11 kept them within striking distance.

And the Brummies found a route back into the meeting with a little assistance from the home side as both Jason Doyle and Peter Kildemand crashed out of Heat 14, the resultant 5-0 bringing the margin back to six points.

That meant a shared heat was required from the last, and again the Robins couldn’t provide two finishers with Batchelor coming off this time, meaning Pedersen and Barker were able to follow Hans Andersen home for a point.

Sebastian Ulamek returns to the Selco Brummies side for Friday’s fixture, as they revert to their regular riding order with Barker and Danny King in the all-important middle-order pairing.

SWINDON 49: Hans Andersen 12, Simon Stead 10+1, Peter Kildemand 9, Troy Batchelor 7, Nick Morris 6+1, Robin Aspegren 3+1, Jason Doyle 2+1.

BIRMINGHAM 43: Bjarne Pedersen 17+1, Danny King 9, Ben Barker 8+2, Josh Auty 6+1, Martin Smolinski 2+1, Chris Mills 1+1, Sebastian Ulamek r/r.
