JASON Lyons smashed the track record as Birmingham ran up their biggest victory of the season over a disappointing Newport side at Perry Barr.

Lyons knocked nearly a second off his previous mark in Heat 5 of this one-sided romp for the Brummies, as he lowered the record to 57.4 shortly after having seen Ulrich Ostergaard equal the old time of 58.1

Ostergaard completed a classy five-ride maximum for the second consecutive home match, but Lyons had to be content with 12 points after he was excluded for fetching off Chris Schramm in the last race.

The Welsh visitors made a disastrous start to the meeting as they conceded five points in four of the first five races, and in Heat 4 they were unable to provide a finisher as both Schramm and Barry Burchatt came to grief.

The best races came when the Brummies riders had to fight from behind, with both Ostergaard and Aidan Collins passing Chris Schramm in the early stages of Heat 6, only for Schramm to come back at Collins on the line.

Lee Smart was unlucky not to take at least a point from a close battle with Phil Morris and Tony Atkin in Heat 7, but did overtake Tom Hedley to team up with Emiliano Sanchez for a 5-1 in Heat 11.

Sanchez's first defeat came when he suffered mechanical failure in Heat 13, and Newport's miserable night was summed up in the next race when leader Atkin stopped when going for double points.

BIRMINGHAM: Ulrich Ostergaard 15, Jason Lyons 12, Emiliano Sanchez 9, Ben Powell 8+2, Lee Smart 7+2, Aidan Collins 6+1, Jon Armstrong 5+2.

NEWPORT: Chris Schramm 8, Tony Atkin 7+1, Tom Hedley 4, Phil Morris 3+3, Michal Rajkowski 2, Barry Burchatt 2, Nick Simmons 1+1.
