BIRMINGHAM are up to fifth place in the Elite League after defeating Peterborough in another highly competitive Perry Barr encounter.

Brummies recovered well from the setback of conceding a 5-1 in the first race to put in a solid all-round team effort which made them worthy victors on the night.

They did, though, have to settle for two league points rather than three thanks to a marvellous ride by visiting captain Nicki Pedersen, who shot between Daniel King and Ben Barker at the end of the first lap in the final race of the night – a move which pegged the Brummies’ winning margin at five.

Pedersen, Troy Batchelor and Linus Sundstrom did the bulk of the Panthers’ scoring with Sundstrom clocking the quickest time at Perry Barr this season in Heat 1.

Ulrich Ostergaard and Claus Vissing both fought their way past Richard Lawson to save a 3-3 in Heat 8, and a 5-1 from Barker and King in Heat 9 put the Brummies twelve points to the good.

But Batchelor then won a tactical ride for double-points, and with Pedersen combining with Sundstrom for a 5-1 in Heat 11 the visitors were suddenly right back in the match.

Barker took his second win of the night in Heat 12 to reduce the pressure, and the meeting victory was not seriously in doubt after that, although Panthers riders winning the last three races did ensure they took their point back to the Showground.

BIRMINGHAM 49: Daniel King 12+1, Ben Barker 8+1, Claus Vissing 7+2, Krzysztof Kasprzak 6+1, Kevin Wolbert 6+1, Ulrich Ostergaard 5+1, Daniel Nermark 5+1.

PETERBOROUGH 44: Troy Batchelor 14, Nicki Pedersen 12+2, Linus Sundstrom 10+1, Krzysztof Buczkowski 7, Alex Davies 1, Richard Lawson 0, Kacper Gomolski r/r.
