BEN Barker produced a blistering performance against his former club to help lift the Brummies into the Elite League’s top four with victory over local rivals Coventry at Perry Barr.

Barker, who won the title with the Bees last season, dropped just two points from six rides and was fully involved in the late races which broke the visitors’ resistance.

Early on, it was guest Dennis Andersson who did the damage as the Swede shared in two Birmingham 5-1s in Heats 2 and 3 which gave them control.

But when Claus Vissing crashed out of Heat 7, Coventry took advantage with a 5-1 in the re-run, and then Edward Kennett snatched a win on the line from Barker in Heat 9 as part of a succession of shared races which left the gap at just two points with four heats to go.

With the tension rising, Barker and Andersson eased the nerves by racing clear of Ryan Fisher in Heat 12, and they repeated the feat in Heat 14 against Kenni Larsen to secure all three points to the delight of the home fans in a big crowd.

And in between those races was a stunning effort from guest Rory Schlein in Heat 13, who had been overtaken by Chris Harris around the outside but repeated the move himself coming off turn four on the last lap for a terrific victory.
