BIRMINGHAM pulled off a stunning 52-38 Elite League win over King's Lynn at Perry Barr on Thursday.

Czech Republic star Ales Dryml gave his best display in Brummies colours with a 15+3 haul as Birmingham dug deep to secure a vital victory.

Maximum points looked very unlikely early on, as they came up against a fast-gating Stars outfit, and visiting riders won four of the first five races.

King’s Lynn’s only significant reward, though, was a 4-2 in Heat 3, although the Brummies dodged a major setback in Heat 5 when both Ben Barker and guest Darcy Ward managed to pass Tomas Topinka for second and third places.

The visitors still led by two points after Heat 7, but they doubled it with another 4-2 in the next race, Topinka the surprise winner, and with Kenneth Bjerre seemingly in dominant form it looked to be a long way back for the Brummies.

But the meeting turned completely with back-to-back Birmingham 5-1s in the next three races, first with Daniel Nermark clamping off Niels-Kristian Iversen in Heat 9 and Barker surging around the outside to join him.

Then Mads Korneliussen was neatly moved aside by Dryml in Heat 10, allowing Ward to follow him through and put the Brummies ahead – but what nobody could have forecast was Dryml and Daniel Nermark heading home the previously unstoppable Bjerre in the next race.

Dryml was replacing Claus Vissing, who aggravated his wrist injury in a second-ride spill, and although he was edged out by Korneliussen in Heat 12, it meant the Stars couldn’t nominate a rider for double points in the next race.

Ward, who displayed stunning speed at times, split Iversen and Bjerre in Heat 13, with Dryml and Barker making the match safe in the penultimate heat.

And then Barker combined with Ward to put the icing on the cake as both rode clever first laps in Heat 15 to take advantage of Iversen and the fading Bjerre drifting wide on turn two, rounding off a thoroughly satisfying night for the Brummies.
