A PATCHED up Birmingham team were left cursing their luck as they went down to a 61-31 Elite League defeat at Lakeside on Friday night.

Already missing Krzysztof Kasprzak and Danny King to suspension and injury they also saw riders suffer mechanical gremlins at the Arena-Essex raceway.

Guest Edward Kennett ground to a halt whilst leading on a tactical ride and Daniel Nermark was in scoring positions when suffering two stoppages.

That said, Lakeside were more than good value for their victory and the lack of race winners for the Brummies proved costly.

Kennett twice took the chequered flag on the way to his 10-point tally, but he was the only visitor to taste victory. Although Joe Screen did mark his debut for Graham Drury’s men with a score of 9+1.

However, Birmingham were never really in the contest as they trailed 17-7 following the completion of heat 4 and after Kennett’s double-point misfortune in heat 6, four successive Hammers 5-1s effectively put the meeting beyond their reach.

LAKESIDE 61: Lee Richardson 12, Adam Shields 10, Ricky Wells 9+1, Peter Ljung 8+3, Kauko Nieminen 8+2, Robert Mear 8+1, Piotr Swiderski 6+1

BIRMINGHAM 31: Edward Kennett 10, Joe Screen 9+1, Ales Dryml 6, Daniel Nermark 3, Claus Vissing 2, Kozza Smith 1+1, Daniel King R/R
