BIRMINGHAM went down to a 56-38 defeat at neighbours Coventry in their first Elite League derby of the season on Friday.

Danny King was top man for the Perry Barr side with a string of impressive rides in his 13-point haul and Ben Barker notched 7+2 on his return to Brandon after leaving Coventry during the winter.

King worked hard for his points but didn’t get the support he needed, particularly from former Coventry man Krzysztof Kasprzak who made an unsuccessful return and failed to win a race.

Home skipper Edward Kennett was at his brilliant best with a 15-point maximum to inspire the reigning champions in their opening league outing of the season.

Brummies boss Graham Drury said: “We were better than our last meeting at Eastbourne but there are still some performances within the team which need to improve.”

Birmingham also lost Daniel Nermark after an awkward tumble and he suffered suspected concussion.

COVENTRY 56: Edward Kennett 15, Przemyslaw Pawlicki 10+1, Hans Andersen 9, Kenni Larsen 8, Richard Sweetman 5+2, Ryan Fisher 5+1, Nick Morris 4+1.

BIRMINGHAM 38: Daniel King 13, Krzysztof Kasprzak 9+1, Ben Barker 7+2, Aaron Summers 3, Theo Pijper 3, Ales Dryml 2, Daniel Nermark 1.
