BRAVE Birmingham were edged out 48-42 by title favourites Poole on their return to top flight racing at Perry Barr.

The Brummies, who were promoted during the winter, could so easily have sprung a surprise but Poole had too much strength in-depth.

It was a thrilling night of racing on a well prepared track and the Brummies will rue two falls suffered by Ben Barker which proved costly.

And Brummies got off to a nightmare start with skipper Krzysztof Kasprzak crashing spectacularly out of Heat 1, referee Jim Lawrence ruling that there had been no contact with Russian rider Renat Gafurov who had moved out to mid-track.

Gafurov duly teamed up with Chris Holder to give the Pirates maximum points in the re-run, but the Brummies would not let the visitors pull away, although they dropped further points in Heat 3 when Barker fell on the third bend, quickly
clearing the track with partner Daniel King up-front.

Poole completed the win in Heat 14 after Birmingham managed to stay on contention with a gusty display which deserved some consolation.

Birmingham’s next home meeting is against the USA Tourists in a National League standard meeting on Thursday week, April 7.

BIRMINGHAM 42: Krzysztof Kasprzak 11, Daniel King 9, Daniel Nermark 8+2, Kevin Wolbert 7+2, Ales Dryml 3, Dakota North 2+2, Ben Barker 2.

POOLE 48: Chris Holder 13, Jason Doyle 12+1, Dennis Andersson 10+3, Davey Watt 8, Renat Gafurov 4+2, Kyle Newman 1, Darcy Ward r/r.
