AIDAN Collins and Brent Werner both had to withdraw from Brummies' Premier Trophy defeat at King's Lynn as the home side continued their dominance of the competition.

But despite their 26-point loss, Brummies can still reach the semi-finals if they take at least a draw from Sunday's return fixture at Perry Barr - and they became the first team in the group to limit the Stars to a score of under 60 at home.

That was partly due to mechanical trouble for Daniel Nermark, but the Brummies had their problems too with Collins crashing out in his first ride - whilst Werner needed attention after his third outing and did not re-emerge.

Back-from-injury Ulrich Ostergaard won two races as Brummies kept things relatively close for the first five races, but the home side then pulled clear with a pair of 5-1s, the second of which saw Jason Lyons' tactical ride fail.

Graham Drury used all of his options with Ostergaard going into Heat 8 as a tactical substitute off 15 metres - and the move worked well as he forced his way into second place.

Lee Smart also had a busy night following Werner's withdrawal, and he gained reward for his efforts with a fine win in Heat 9 ahead of Trevor Harding and Nermark.

But the Brummies ran out of steam towards the end and conceded 5-1s in three consecutive races before sharing the points in the last heat, Ostergaard and Lyons packing in behind maximum man Tomas Topinka.

KING'S LYNN: Tomas Topinka 14+1, James Brundle 12+2, Paul Lee 10+1, Trevor Harding 9+1, Chris Mills 8, Daniel Nermark 3+2, Simon Lambert 3+1.

BIRMINGHAM: Ulrich Ostergaard 14+1, Lee Smart 8+1, Jason Lyons 7, Emiliano Sanchez 2, Ben Powell 1+1, Brent Werner 1, Aidan Collins 0.
